Sem 5 Project 1 Preliminary Studies

Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur

The “Dragon” that is guarding the Petaling Street, fending off the Bengals is an analogy of the diminishing indigenous Chinese community, thwarted by the surgence of foreigners. The Dragon’s head, is facing towards the land of wealth and prosperity, keeping an eye of the banks. In the past, the Chinese community that used to live and work in Petaling street had accumulated a lot of wealth, which they treasure it in the banks along Jalan Tun Perak. However, towards the side of the Dragon’s tail, beyond Jalan Sultan, is where all the negative forces happening, the struggle between the Dragon and Bengal damages the culture and tradition of the area. The chaos causes the local community to emigrate to the outer skirts like the areas of Ampang and Cheras, from the rubble and torn values, the pests start inviting themselves in. The snakes and rats are a resemblance of prostitution and drug abusers. The discrepancy among the Dragon’s Head and Tail is most prominent at night, when the bad critters come out to play, with no fear of the local police force. Fortunately the Head is still teeming with life, but it is all just a lie, the Dragon is slowy transforming into a stone, an ornament for the tourist with no soul. The only local community still thriving is sparse and old.

The Phoenix, soaring mightily above the skies, is a new generation of force. The educated and innovative young entrepreneurs, with their shadows daunting the pest away. They are the allies of the Dragon, rejuvenating the place by carefully preserving authenticness of the past while appealing their programme to the visitors. Although the Dragon will never return to its former glory, but at least the land are in better hands. Will the Phoenix resurrect Chinatown to another Golden age? Only time will tell.
