Sem 3 Project 1 Memorial

Rohingya Genocide Memorial

Not just a place for remembrance, rather a place to remember how oblivious to disaster and tragedies happening around us. This memorial represents a connection, a bridge around us and them that are clearly visible yet by a small margin or medium, only ever seeing our own reflections but never on the other side.

Approaching the memorial, one is invited to descend below the grounds, a stream of water subtly leads the user to the concentric point of the memorial where it exposes a reveal of the outside world. A frosted glass blurring the views of the inside and outside signifies the gap between two worlds - the mundane society and the forgotten Rohingya community.

Inside the concentric chamber, users experience the water from above gently trickles from the thin layer of pond above to the center of the island, forming ripples which spreads outwards. An inviting thought of how the forgotten suffering of Rohingya community might reach our ears, but it's too subtle for the outer world to take notice.

Guided by the light above, users ascends the stairs slowly uncovers the water streaming into the bowl, drawn by curiosity, users climb up the ramp and as they journey to the pinnacle, the cycle of the water from the lake to the concentric point of the memorial is revealed, suggesting the saying of "what goes around comes around" that the modern society are too oblivious and selective in taking world news and disaster.

As they descend and walk out of the chamber, the blurring views of the inside and the silhouettes further make their heart moved as now they realized they burdening truth of the modern world suffering still exist.

Sabah Earthquake Memorial

Using architectural spaces, elements, materials and scale, this memorial tells a story and journey. A story and journey of the victims of 2015 Sabah earthquake tragedy, and to remember them. This memorial allows people to find solace in a rather minimalistic yet spiritual spaces. Using 3 contrasting spaces to different message in a linear fashion, this memorial allows the poetic experience of spaces through senses.

As user approach the site, they are confronted by 2 converging slabs stabbed into the ground with a cut in the axis, users are able to climb to the apex and take a breathtaking view of nature, enjoying its beauty. They then descend below the ground as the journey continues.

As they journey through the dark, a colonnade of light slowly reveals and gently splits into 18 light poles as they progress through the spaces, suggesting the spirits of the victims. The light poles are translucent glass tubes illuminated by the natural light above. The echoes of footsteps on hanging steel structure radiates throughout the cold air of underground. As user look down into the abyss, they are bestowed upon the open cracks of earthquake, endless and dark, revealing the fear of the victims.

The walkway ascends and lead the users up and out of the darkness, the light warms them up. As they turn around, they are confronted by 2 falling slabs which overwhelms them in size, as they walk down the path, the ground engulfs them, rendering them feeling powerless against the force of nature.
